Ukrainian Refugees in Romania

Since the Russian invasion in late February, tens of thousands of Ukrainians, mostly women and children, have been pouring across the border into Romania seeking refuge and help. As we continue to pray for those in Ukraine and Russia, one tangible way to help is via one of our global mission partners, Missio International. Through its church partners along the border, Missio International is stepping in to bring aid and hope to these refugees. To learn more about how you can help, follow them on their Facebook Page or visit MissioInternational.org

About The Trip

Activities include working with children, teens, elderly, special needs adults, and victims of domestic violence.  Some will focus on sorting and preparing for distribution several truckloads of clothing that has been received from Western Europe.  Others will do handyman work for the programs and needy clients.  Some activities will include preaching, leading devotions, sharing Bible stories and crafts, and much more.  On Tuesdays, the team goes to a poor Roma (Gypsy) village and share in worship, crafts, and meal service.

Other activities include visiting the local market, learning the history of this medieval city, and visiting homes of clients and staff.  Most of all we go in Jesus’ name to encourage and equip the staff.  In the process, we also learn to know each other better as brothers and sisters in Christ.

At the end of the trip, we typically visit Danes, an outlying village, to view a program that was founded by a previous Veritas staff member and is helping to meet the spiritual and physical needs of that community.  In the afternoon we travel on to ALPINIS, which is a Christian retreat center in the Carpathian Mountains.  This gives us the opportunity to reflect on our ministry experiences and pray for God’s leading as we return home on Sunday.

Our tentative schedule is as follows:

April 22 -Depart from Charleston Airport

April 23 -Arrive at Sibiu Airport and travel to Sighisoara (2-hour drive)

April 24 -Participate in Veritas’ orientation including their history, community needs, and social programs.  There will be a guided tour of the Old City

April 25 -Visit to Outdoor Market and Viscri, a historical village, where we will join in Kids’ Bible Club

April 26 -Worship at Church of the Nazarene, Pastor Karl preaching

April 27-May 1 Participate in staff devotions, ministry programs, and other projects at Veritas and support activities at Tigmandru, an outlying village

May 1  -Travel to Sighetu, Maratiei in Maramures county, Transylvania

May 2   -Visit the home of Elie Wiesel, a Nobel Laureate and Holocaust survivor, author of Night, a work based on his experiences as a Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz concentration camp

Visit the Sighet Memorial Prison, which was used to hold intellectuals and religious leaders who were opposed to Communism.  The Museum tells the story of the heavy punishments for those held in custody which often resulted in death. The experience will leave you thankful for the religious freedom that we enjoy in the US.

May 3 - Learn the history of the Maramures region and visit wooden churches en route to Alpinis where we will stay for 3 nights.

May 4 -  Enjoy two days of reflection, hiking, prayer and other activities at this ministry center in the heart of Transylvania’s Carpathian Mountains.  You will learn about Missio Link International’s programs to abused and trafficked girls and how the Alpinis facility supports various ministries for Romanian pastors, youth, and church groups.

May 6 - Return to the USA
